2015-16 season for Rolando Villazón highlights new horizons and familiar works

The 2015-16 season for Rolando Villazón sees the acclaimed tenor in both new roles and familiar works, with highlights set to include a European concert tour with Cecilia Bartoli, the Royal Opera House tour of Japan, and the world premiere of a new work at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

Following a return to the Salzburg Festival in July and August — which will see Rolando in a gala concert celebrating the 40th anniversary of Plácido Domingo’s Salzburg debut on July 30 and in his role debut as Pylade in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride August 19 through 28 — Rolando joins the Royal Opera House on its tour to Japan in September. From September 13 to 23, he reprises his acclaimed Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, a work he sings with the ROH in London this summer.

In October, Rolando returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper for two performances as the title role in Massenet’s Werther October 25 and 28. He returns to the Bavarian opera house in January and February of 2016 to star as Robert Falcon Scott in the world premiere of South Pole, Miroslav Srnka and Tim Holloway’s opera about the parallel quests by Scott and Norwegian adventurer Roald Amundsen (sung by Thomas Hampson) to become the first to reach the South Pole. Performances of South Pole take place January 31 to February 11, with an additional showing on July 5, 2016. Rolando also appears in Munich next summer for two performances as Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata July 15 and 18, and gives additional performances as Alfredo earlier in 2016 at the Royal Opera House on March 1, 4, and 7.

December of 2015 sees Rolando Villazón paired with Cecilia Bartoli for a concert tour of arias, duets, and opera scenes by Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. The duo is set to give performances in Munich, Prague, Amsterdam, London, and Paris, with further cities to be announced. Rolando also gives a mini-tour with William Christie in March of 2016 of Mozart’s Il re pastore, performed in concert in Barcelona and Paris with additional engagements also to be announced.
