2017-18 Season Highlights: “Belcanto” recital tour, Wiener Staatsoper return, concert tour with Ildar Abdrazakov, Die Fledermaus staging, Papageno debut

Rolando Villazon’s 2017-18 season sees the acclaimed tenor in two productions at the Wiener Staatsoper, a Belcanto recital tour in Europe as well as a concert tour with Ildar Abdrazakov, his new staging of Strauss’s Die Fledermaus at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and his role debut as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.

Rolando begins his season with the “Belcanto” recital tour with pianist Carrie-Ann Matheson. The program will feature songs by Bellini and Verdi, among others, and takes Villazón and Matheson to Hannover’s Kuppelsaal (September 22), Graz’s Musikverein (September 27), Dusseldorf’s Tonhalle (September 30), the KKL Luzern (October 7), Dresden’s Kulturpalast (October 13), and Frankfurt’s Alte Oper (October 16). The duo reunite in the summer of 2018 at the Munich Opera Festival (July 18) and Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival (July 21).

In November, he reunites with conductor Guerassim Voronkov for a concert tour with bass baritone Ildar Abdrazakov and the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava in a program comprising beloved arias, duets and instrumental works from the French and Italian operatic repertoire, including Faust, Mefistofele and L’elisir d’amore. The concert tour takes the artists to Prague’s Smetana Hall (November 20), Berlin’s Philharmonie (November 23), the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden (November 26), Stuttgart’s Liederhalle (November 29), Munich’s Philharmonie (December 3), Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Elysées (December 9), and the Wiener Konzerthaus (December 12).

Rolando returns to the Wiener Staatsoper for two productions at the famed Viennese house: first in the title role of Gounod’s Faust under the baton of Frédéric Chaslin (January 25 & 28, February 2, 2018), and second as Lenski in Tchaikovksy’s Eugene Onegin led by Louis Langrée (February 25 & 28, March 3, 2018).

An ambassador for the Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg, Rolando returns to the festival celebrating the iconic composer for a concert with conductor Kristina Poska and the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg.

In March 2018, Rolando reprises the title of role of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Müpa Budapest Early Music Festival (March 10, 2018).

In the spring, audiences can hear Rolando on the concert stage in Switzerland at Winterthur’s Musikkollegium (March 16) and the KKL Luzern (March 18), as well as at Montreal’s Maison Symphonique (May 5).

On April 28 (discrepancy with the dates, on the Deutsche Oper website it says April 28, 2018, the Deutsche Oper premieres Rolando’s new staging of Strauss’s Die Fledermaus. (April 28, May 1,5,8, & 29, June 3 & 8, 2018).

In summer 2018, Rolando continues his Mozart cycle with conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Deutsche Grammophon label, this time making his debut in the beloved baritone role of Papageno in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.
