German critics praise Rolando’s role debut as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni

Rolando’s role debut as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s masterpiece Don Giovanni has been met with rave reviews by Germany’s leading critics. Die Welt was short and to the point, describing his portrayal of the role as “round, beautiful and genial.” Sueddeutsche Zeitung was more loquacious in their praise of Rolando’s performance, stating that, “Together with [Yannick Nezet-]Seguin, Rolando Villazon turns Ottavio’s first aria into an impressionist cocoon of unfulfilled longing.” Pforzheimer Zeitung also weighed in on the gala evening in Baden-Baden, saying, “Rolando Villazon sings Don Ottavio with vibrant lines, and with a full tone that is always light and floating.” The performance, which in addition to Rolando featured an all-star cast that included Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Luca Pisaroni, Diana Damrau, Joyce DiDonato, and Mojca Erdmann, was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon for future release.
