Gramophone Magazine names Rolando “the Nemorino of the DVD era”

In its November issue, Gramophone magazine surveys all audio and audio-visual recordings of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore produced over the last 60 years.  Contributors selected Rolando’s interpretation of Nemorino as their first choice for the “DVD era,” in line with the interpretations of Caruso and Pavarotti for their respective eras.  Gramophone wrote in their analysis: “So far, so good – but has any tenor ever acted the role as vividly as Rolando Villazón? Doe-eyed, poignant, bursting with amorous feeling and good humour, Villazón gives us enough in one perfomance to fill a dozen other tenors’ portrayals. He also sings thoughtfully, remembering that a soft head voice is a important for Nemorino as a full-throated fortissimo. No wonder he was filmed twice; both times the audience wins an encore of “Una furtiva lagrima”. (…) Nemorino is remarkable: this is Villazon’s show, ans his fizzing energy starts to feels quite intoxicating. Whatever do theatre directors put in his glass? The Elixir of love, perhaps?”
