Mozart Concert Arias tour takes critically acclaimed album performance on the road
Last Friday in Prague, Rolando Villazón kicked off his European tour of Mozart Concert Arias–music featured on his critically acclaimed Deutsche Grammophon album. A “fascinating collection with some striking unearthings” (The Independent), Mozart Concert Arias explores the composer’s rarely-recorded arias for tenor and has received international praise. Diapason Magazine, which awarded the album five out of five diapasons, remarks how Rolando deploys the album’s repertoire with “une substance énorme, un timbre gorge de couleurs, un tsunami de sentiments” and lauds Rolando’s commitment to the performances, saying that “une telle prise de risque impose le respect et, avouons-le, beaucoup de tendresse.”
Voix des Arts notes how Rolando’s “individual, uncomplicated approach to the music communicates the soul of each aria in a direct manner that is refreshing and ultimately very touching,” and writes that “his is a voice that, in the space of a single bar of music, can burst with laughter or drip with tears.”
For Opera News, the Mexican tenor’s performance of “Per pietà, non ricercate” highlights “Villazón’s clean line, warm and engaged phrasing, and attention to dynamics.” For The Times this collection of arias is full of “entertaining fare, punched out with passion and personality by a singer clearly enjoying himself and flying free.”
Rolando continues his European tour of Mozart concert arias through May.
