Rolando and the Bolivar Soloists in Hanover
As they approach the finale of their 11-city European tour, Rolando and the Bolivar Soloists made their debut at Hanover’s Kuppelsaal on November 24 in a concert featuring selections from their new joint recording on Deutsche Grammophon, ¡México!.
The Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung wrote of the evening: “[Listening to and watching Rolando Villazon], one understands the meaning of the phrase ‘Auf Fluegeln des Gesanges’ (on the wings of song). Villazon is still a great singer and his musical hommage to his native Mexico is great art… He fills music with life like few other singers do. He is supported by the elegant playing of the Bolivar Soloists whose tasteful arrangements remove them from any suspicion of Kitsch. The instrumentation is clearly classical and gives Villazon the space to approach the songs’ themes of love and pain without irony. That this never becomes embarrassing is testimony to Villazon’s great artistry: he is a master of communicating and transporting big emotions. And, of course, his voice is beautiful. Villazon flew.”
There are two more concerts in Germany, on November 28 in Baden-Baden and on December 1 in Frankfurt. The tour culminates in a performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall on December 6.
