Rolando signs new exclusive Deutsche Grammophon recording contract

Rolando Villazón has signed a new and exclusive multi-album recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. On the heels of hosting Germany’s Echo Klassik Awards this past weekend, the Mexican tenor appeared at Deutsche Grammophon’s Berlin headquarters on Monday, driving a specially-liveried taxi ‒ the “Yellow Cab” ‒ and sporting the characteristic black top hat and white silk scarf of one of his musical heroes, Giuseppe Verdi.
Rolando also announced his brand new album, Villazón Verdi
‒ a personal journey through some of the composer’s greatest and most popular arias, alongside lesser known arias and songs, all taken from one of the richest oeuvres in operatic history.
On signing this new contract with the Yellow Label, Rolando commented: “I am very happy to renew my collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, and to continue to contribute to its immense and prestigious catalogue. It is great to start this new chapter together by celebrating the wonderful Maestro Giuseppe Verdi, with his powerful music that goes directly into the listener’s heart. Verdi is virtually unmatched in expressing his characters’ emotions. The special qualities of bel canto and verismo come together in his music like no other composer. He was a man who came from the people, and composed for the people. To perform Verdi is to perform variations on the eternal melody of the human soul.”
In addition, Rolando launched a unique online global competition, which will give Verdi fans around the world the opportunity to create their own anniversary video content, using one of Villazón’s own new recordings. Participants in “My La donna è mobile” will be judged by the tenor himself, with one lucky fan winning a special VIP trip to see a Villazón/Verdi concert.
Speaking on the tenor’s new contract, and his appointment as Deutsche Grammophon’s “Special Verdi Ambassador” for 2013’s bicentennial year, Frank Briegmann, President of Universal Music Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Deutsche Grammophon, said: ”Rolando is a godsend for the whole industry. With his engaging character and genre-crossing genius, he continues to attract new audiences to classical music. He unites artistic brilliance and innovative presentation, making him a lead figure of a new generation of classical music stars. Viewing classical music as a dynamic, constantly evolving and forward-looking genre, Deutsche Grammophon will remain his reliable partner on a long-term basis. I am very much looking forward to a joint future with Rolando.”
