Rolando sings Hoffmann in Munich opening October 31
Rolando returns to one of his most critically acclaimed roles on October 31 when he portrays the title character in a new production of Jacques Offenbach’s classic opera Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Bayerische Staatsoper. All performances, including encores on November 4, 9, 12, 17, 21, and 25, will be conducted by Carydis Constantinos. The performances on November 17 and 21 will be recorded for a delayed television broadcast on a date to be announced.
Richard Jones’s new production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann also features soprano Diana Damrau as the Four Heroines and bass John Relyea as the Four Villains. Unfortunately, with the recent addition of the performance on November 17, Rolando must withdraw from the “Les grandes voix” gala concert in Paris on November 18 where he was scheduled to perform one aria. Rolando is thrilled that Les contes d’Hoffmann will be recorded and is looking forward to singing for the Paris audience on December 3.
Of Rolando’s last turn as Hoffmann, in 2008 at Covent Garden, Rupert Christiansen of England’s The Telegraph remarked, “Clearly relaxed and enjoying himself, [Villazón] sang firmly and securely, hitting top notes squarely and sustaining climaxes without wavering, carving a shapely melodic line and painting the mercurial, conflicted personality of the drunken bipolar poet with tremendous wit and panache.”
