Rolando Villazón directs and stars in Massenet’s Werther
Rolando Villazón has a long and wonderful relationship with Massenet’s opera, Werther. His acclaimed portrayal of the romantic poet is beloved by opera audiences around the globe. Expanding this relationship, Villazón takes on a new role in the upcoming production at the Opera de Lyon, when he steps off the stage and makes his directorial debut in their new production of Massenet’s masterpiece. In this exciting venture which opens January 24 and runs through February 7, Villazón will be directing a cast that includes tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz in the title role and mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes as Charlotte. Leopold Hager conducts.
Later in the spring, Villazón returns to Werther, this time in his more familar place on stage, when he stars as the title character at the Royal Opera House. Convent Garden’s music director Antonio Pappano will conduct the production that opens on May 5. Villazón will be joined by follow cast members Sophie Koch and Eri Nakamura.
