Rolando Villazón returns to South Pole at Bayerische Staatsoper as part of Munich Opera Festival

As part of the company’s annual Munich Opera Festival, the Bayerische Staatsoper welcomes Rolando Villazón back to the stage for a one-night-only revival of South Pole on July 5.

Miroslav Srnka’s opera about the doomed Antarctic expedition premiered earlier this year with Rolando originating the role of British explorer Robert Falcon Scott and will see him once again paired with Thomas Hampson as the Norwegian adventurer Roald Amundsen. Mojca Erdmann is the Landlady, and Tara Erraught is Kathleen Scott. Kirill Petrenko conducts the production, which is directed by Hans Neuenfels.

Rolando will also be heard as Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata as part of the 2016 Festival.

In the coming season, Rolando returns to the role of Scott for additional performances in Munich on January 18, 21, and 23, 2017.
