Rolando Villazón stars in world premiere of South Pole at Bayerische Staatsoper


2016 begins for Rolando Villazón with the world premiere production of South Pole at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Composer Miroslav Srnka and playwright Tim Holloway’s work, recounting British explorer Robert Scott and Norwegian adventurer Roald Amundsen’s parallel quests to become the first to reach the south pole, stars Rolando as Scott opposite Thomas Hampson as Amundsen. Hans Neuenfels directs the production, which is conducted by Kirill Petrenko and also stars Tara Erraught and Mojca Erdmann. South Pole opens on January 31, running through February 11.

January 31’s premiere will be broadcast with a time-delay in Germany and France on Arte, beginning at 10:40 pm. Streaming on Arte.com will take place simultaneously with the television airing.
