Rolando Villazón’s La Rondine opens at Oper Graz

Following its premiere at the Deutsche Oper Berlin two years ago, Rolando Villazón’s production of La Rondine opens in its first Austrian outing at Oper Graz on January 12.

As noted with the Tagesspiegel before the production’s maiden voyage in Berlin, Rolando’s interpretation of Puccini’s sentimental and bittersweet love story adds a surreal layer to the plot in order to mine the work’s dramatic depths. “I would like to show the main character Magda as a strong woman who has no desire to fit into a bourgeois destiny. She cannot stand still and is always somewhere else in her thoughts,” he said in 2015.

In Graz, Sophia Brommer stars as Magda with Mickael Spadaccini as Ruggero, Pavel Petrov as Prunier, Tatjana Miyus as Lisette, and Wilfried Zelinka as Rambaldo. Marco Comin and Marius Burkert trade off on the podium.

Performances take place January 12, 15, 18, 25; February 2, 5, 10; and March 5, 11, 18, and 24.
