Rolando wins Echo Klassik award for “¡México!”
Rolando Villazon was one of the lucky few last night to take home an Echo Klassik Award, Germany’s most coveted prize for a classical music recording. Rolando received the “Klassik ohne Grenzen,” or the “Music Without Borders,” award for his Deutsche Grammophon recording ¡Mexico!, which features songs from the tenor’s homeland. In an official statement, the Echo Klassik jury said, “Rolando Villazon interprets the musical declaration of love to his home country Mexico on a broad spectrum between great intimacy and burning passion. Offering chamber music-like jewels from Central America, he walks the borderline between classical music and folklore convincingly.” Rolando also performed at the ceremony, singing “Pourquoi me revellier” from Werther with the Konzerthausorchester under the baton of Ivan Fischer.
