Staatsoper Berlin Don Giovanni inaugurates a season devoted to Mozart

Rolando Villazón kicks off his fall operatic season as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Staatsoper Berlin in performances that run from October 18 to November 3. Daniel Barenboim leads a cast that sees Rolando as the love-sick Don Ottavio, Christine Schäfer as his onstage fiancée Donna Anna, Dorothea Röschmann as the vengeful Donna Elvira, and Christopher Maltman in the title role, among many others.

The music of Mozart figures prominently in Rolando’s 2013-14 season. In January 2014, Deutsche Grammophon releases Mozart Concert Arias – a collection of rarely recorded concert arias for tenor written by the genius composer, recorded with Sir Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra.  Later this season, the Mexican French tenor reprises the role of Don Ottavio at the Wiener Staatsoper, returns to the Teatro alla Scala as Ferrando in Così fan tutte, performs with Marc Minkowski and the Musiciens du Louvre to mark the composer’s birthday at Salzburg’s “Mozartwoche” 2014, and will also perform Mozart’s concert arias next spring with the Basel Chamber Orchestra.

You can also hear him sing Don Ottavio on Deutsche Grammophon’s complete recording of the opera, which inaugurated Rolando and Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s Mozart cycle, which now includes Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte.
