2018/2019 Season Highlights


On October 21, Rolando brings his vibrant energy and charm to the Semperoper Dresden Opera Gala and Award Ceremony, taking audiences on a festive musical journey through centuries of opera. The talented tenor will both host and sing at the event, performing alongside the singers of the Semperoper Ensemble and accompanied by the Staatskapelle Dresden. The evening will also include an Award Ceremony for the Semperoper Foundation, which honors outstanding performers and ensembles. Later, on November 15, Rolando travels to Tonhalle Düsseldorf for a program of music from Italy, Spain, and South America. Performing with frequent collaborator, pianist Carrie-Ann Matheson, Rolando offers a spirited song recital full of musical gems from the Italian and Spanish masters. The pair perform the program throughout the season, with recitals in Munich (November 29), Paris (December 20), and Dortmund (December 23).

On December 4, Rolando makes his Elbphilharmonie Hamburg debut, performing with the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester under the baton of conductor Guerassim Voronkov, in a sold-out performance of Bellini, Verdi, and de Falla.

The new year begins with Mozartwoche 2019, a joyful celebration of Mozart’s remarkable legacy and gifts to humanity. This year marks the first year of Rolando’s five-year tenure as Artistic Director. From January 24-February 3, Rolando and the Stiftung Mozarteum Salzburg will present many exciting international guests, including tenor Ramón Vargas, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, violinist Janine Jansen, mime Nola Rae, slam poet Lisa Eckhart, and many more. As part of the festival, Rolando performs in Mozart’s Requiem, alongside distinguished soloists Christiane Karg (soprano), Angela Bower (mezzo-soprano), and Adam Plachetka (bass). Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts, leading the Vienna Philharmonic.

Following Mozartwoche, Rolando travels to Vienna to perform as Don Octavio in Don Giovanni under the baton of Antonello Manacorda at the Wiener Staatsoper. He is joined by Peter Mattei (Don Giovanni), Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti (Donna Anna), Véronique Gens (Donna Elvira), and Adam Plachetka (Leporello) for three performances on March 10, 14, and 17. At the end of March, Rolando performs in two concerts with the Colombian Youth Philharmonic led by Andrés Orozco-Estrada in Frankfurt (March 30) and Cologne (March 31).

In April, Rolando directs a new production of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s ballet opera, Platée, in a production which marks Rolando’s directing debut at the Semperoper. Paul Agnew conducts, leading Mark Milhofer, Sebastian Wartig, Iulia Maria Dan, Tania Lorenzo, and the Staatskapelle Dresden.

From April 20-May 19, Rolando performs with new Opernkinderorchester at Staatsoper Under den Linden, singing four performances, one during the annual Festtage conducted by Daniel Barenboim. Rolando also reunites with pianist Carrie-Ann Matheson for a recital on May 1 at Opernhaus Zürich.

Rolando closes the 2018/2019 Season with Pelléas et Mélisande, again performing in Ruth Berghaus’s classic, groundbreaking production at Staatsoper Unter den Linden on May 25, 29; June 1, and 7. Maxime Pascal conducts the Staatskapelle Berlin.
