Mozartwoche 2020 Begins This Week!

Mozartwoche 2020 begins on January 23, marking the second year of Rolando Villazón’s tenure as the festival’s Artistic Director.

The festival brings together many of the greatest artists in classical music today including Daniel Barenboim, Andreas Ottensamer, Radek Baborák, Emmanuel Pahud, François Leleux, Mitsuko Uchida, and András Schiff.

One of the highlights of the 2020 festival will be Robert Wilson’s staged production of Handel’s The Messiah, as adapted by Mozart. Mozart translated the text into German, re-ordered the work, and scored the piece for winds and brass. Marc Minkowski returns to Mozartwoche to perform the oratorio with the Les Musiciens du Louvre and a cast of carefully selected singers.

Mozartwoche 2020 also features two other new stage projects. The first project, Pùnkitititi! was created by artist Doug Fitch for the Salzburg Marionette Theatre and features Mozart’s music for pantomime. The second project is titled Mozart Moves! – Seven Playlets, and features seven original works by celebrated writers Martha Batiz, John von Düffel, Tom Holloway, Shlomo Moskovitz, Guadalupe Nettel, Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, and Jorge Volpi. Each of the playlets was inspired by divertimeti that Mozart composed for wind and brass instruments.
