Rolando Directs L’Elisir d’Amore in Leipzig
Following acclaimed productions of La Traviata at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and Die Fledermaus at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Rolando Villazón brings his production of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore to Opernhaus Leipzig.
First mounted at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Villazón’s production brings Donizetti’s classic opera to an American movie studio of the 1940s, as a western is being filmed. Adina (Bianca Tognocchi) and Belcore (Franz Xaver Schlecht) are the film’s lead actors, with Dulcamara (Sejong Chang) as director and Nemorino (Piotr Buszewski) as a clumsy extra. The opera plays on two levels: in front of and behind the camera.
Conductor Giedrė Slekytė leads the Gewandhausorchester. Performances run September 14, 22; October 3; November 1; January 4; March 13; and April 25.
