‘L’Orfeo’ and more in Salzburg
Rolando Villazón joins the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation, where he is Artistic Director, for Mozart Week, January 23-February 2. This year’s theme is ‘Destination Mozart,’ where all roads lead to Mozart via Bach, Monteverdi, Handel, and others, who were role models and inspirations to the young composer.
Villazón returns to what is quickly becoming a signature role for the tenor, the title role Monteverdi’s retelling of the Orpheus myth, L’Orfeo. Playing January 24, 26, and 31, Christina Pluhar conducts the Ensemble L’Arpeggiata in Nikolaus Habjan’s acclaimed production. Villazón appears alongside Céline Scheen as La Musica and Proserpina and Tamara Ivaniš as Euridice.
Additionally, Villazón will host the opening concert on January 23, featuring pianist Gabriela Montero and soprano Lauren Snouffer, with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg under the baton of Roberto González-Monjas. On January 27, Villazón joins Los Mariachis Negros for Serenata Mexicana, a short program at the Mozartplatz, and again acts as host for the closing concert on February 2, which features the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and pianists Robert Levin and Ya-Fei Chuang, conducted by Andreas Ottensamer.
