Nikolaus Habjan’s new production of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at Dresden’s Semperoper has been celebrated by critics, with Rolando Villazón’s performance in the title role being praised as “magnificent” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Following four sold-out performances and a likewise sold-out Monteverdi Gala, also with the Lautten Compagney and Wolfgang Katschner, Rolando embarks on another iteration of the fabled character of Orfeo: He performs Orfeo in Haydn’s opera L’anima del filosofo alongside Cecilia Bartoli and Thomas Hampson at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival on May 27. The concert performance is conducted by Gianluca Capuano at the helm of Les Musiciens du Prince. In the summer festival season, Rolando reprises Monteverdi’s Orfeo again in a new production at Santa Fe Opera, directed by Yuval Sharon and conducted by Harry Bicket.
