‘Pelléas et Mélisande’ at the Vienna Staatsoper
This fall, Rolando Villazón returns to the Vienna Staatsoper, debuting as Pelléas in Marco Arturo Marelli’s production of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande. Composed in 1901, this stunning work is Debussy’s only completed opera, a Symbolist masterpiece imbued with deep meaning and a shimmering musical language. Marelli’s production sets the action in what resembles a flooded bunker, a secluded retreat that reflects the nuance of Debussy’s magical score.
Led by conductor Alain Altinoglu, Villazón stars alongside mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as Mélisande, baritone Simon Keenlyside as Golaud, Jean Teitgen as Arkel, and Zoryana Kushpler as Geneviève. Pelléas et Mélisande plays October 27 and 30 and November 2 and 5.
